Welcome to The Spotter!
My name is Nolan Vannata. I’m a fitness and nutrition coach that helps busy professionals lose weight and have more energy in their daily lives.
This newsletter provides simple, realistic strategies for you to lose weight and get strong so you can look and feel your best.
This is a short article. I am trying to save you time, right?
As a coach who specializes in helping people with demanding jobs lose weight and get fit, time and energy are the biggest barriers to changing nutrition and exercise habits.
The concept of minimal effective dose is frequently at the top of my mind. It describes the least amount of a thing we can do to get a significant result.
Think of it like medicine.
You probably already understand this concept if you have ever taken medicine.
If I give you 2 aspirin, I might fix your headache. However, if I give you a quarter of 1 pill, nothing will happen. And if I give you 20, you’ll become extremely sick and potentially die.
So, the minimal effective dose of aspirin might be around 2 pills. It could be 1 or 3, but I’m not a pharmacist or health care provider. You get the point.
Start asking yourself the question…
“What’s the least amount I can do to see results?”
If dropping your calories by 500 can result in weight loss at a reasonable pace, why drop by 1,000? And if you aren’t currently exercising, why set a goal to workout 4 days per week when 1 or 2 would be enough to improve? Why aim for 10,000 steps per day if you’re currently only getting 3,000? Bumping that up to 4-5000 would already be a massive improvement.
This isn’t just a time saver… it’s an energy saver. The amount of willpower to do the easier thing requires less than the harder thing. But in this case, the easier thing still gets you results!

As a healthcare provider, I love this analogy. Super helpful to think about exercise in this way
